About This Route
Best traveled during the middle of the year (May to September), this route takes you away from the crowds. Explore the deep natural harbor of Trincomalee, snorkel at Pigeon Island, and surf the world-famous breaks at Arugam Bay.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1-2: The Long Drive East
A long but rewarding drive across the country. Watch the landscape change from lush tropics to the dry zone.
Day 3-4: Trincomalee & Snorkeling
Relax on Nilaveli beach. Take a boat trip to Pigeon Island for world-class snorkeling with reef sharks and turtles.
Day 5: Pasikudah Bay
Drive south along the coast to Pasikudah, famous for its shallow, calm bay. Perfect for swimming and relaxation.
Day 6-8: Surf in Arugam Bay
Continue south to Arugam Bay. Enjoy the vibrant surf culture, beachside parties, and perhaps a safari in nearby Kumana National Park.
Day 9: Into the Hills
Leave the coast and drive up into the cool mountains of Ella. A stunning transition of scenery.
Day 10: The Journey Home
The longest drive of the trip, winding down the mountains and back across to the west coast to drop off your Tuk Tuk.
